Linux Mint on VirtualBox for Mac

Question

In your instructions about installing Linux Mint 19 on VirtualBox you don’t make any mention about the VirtualBox Guest Additions. There is need to install it or it is just build in on Linux Mint?

Thanks

  1. Hi josefcarel,
    The VirtualBox Guest Additions package is not included on Linux Mint.

    I’ve written a dedicated article on Installing VirtualBox 6.0 on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. I demonstrated the process of getting VirtualBox Guest Additions installed. Since Linux Mint is built on top of Ubuntu, the procedures shown in this article should work for you as well with little to no change.

    You may read the article at https://linuxhint.com/install_virtualbox_6_ubuntu/

    Best of luck.

  2. I see your instructions but they are for the extension package but I understand the guest additions are inside Linux Mint 19.1

    But my computer is a MacBook Pro with macOS Mojave and it seems VirtualBox is not working well with this OS. I have tried to install Linux Mint 19.1 and the guest additions but it doesn’t work at all.

    What is the problem, or maybe my mistake?

    Thanks

    Josef

  3. The problem most likely is that VirtualBox can’t compile the required kernel modules in your operating system. You have to install the latest kernel and the kernel headers on your operating system. You also need the required build tools (GCC) installed on your system.

    On Ubuntu/Linux Mint, you can install the required kernel headers and build tools with the following command:
    $ sudo apt install build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r) dkms

    Then rebuild VirtualBox kernel module with the following command:
    $ sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup

    Your problem should be solved.

    Good luck.
